Bloom Lounge Chair

I visited the Interior Design Show in Toronto this weekend and, as always, it was filled with inspiration.

It was a thrill to finally meet face to face with the Bloom Lounge Chair (above) at the Emily Quinn booth. I’ve long been intrigued by Kenneth Cobonpue’s whimsical flower-shaped chair but this was my first time seeing one in person. In magazine photos the petals have more folds and frills and the chair somehow seems more alive but still, it is incredibly imaginative, impressive and surprisingly comfy.

A couple of months ago I started reading Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin and I posted about it here. As I said back then, rather than a “how-to” book, this is more like a memoir of nine months in the author’s life as she goes about making her home life happier.

Month by month, she focuses on a particular area in her life and attempts to make changes which she hopes will invite more happiness into her home. She starts in September by tackling her family’s possessions, then moves through the categories of marriage, parenthood, interior design, time, body, family, neighborhood and “now”.

Today is a bright and sunny day, perfect for a drive out to Ajax, home of the Sklar Peppler furniture outlet where they’re having a big sale. It was my first time out there and I was very pleasantly surprised at the great quality, wide selection and reasonable prices. Most of all, I was inspired by the beautiful upholstery fabric used on the chairs in the showroom.

I’ve just started reading Happier at Home by Gretchen Rubin. It’s the follow-up to The Happiness Project which I haven’t read, but is a best-seller and, from all accounts, an inspirational read.

This book is somewhat of a memoir covering nine months in the life of the author as she embarks on making changes to her home in her quest to become happier. ”Of all the elements of a happy life,” she writes, “my home is the most important.”

HGTV.com

This month I was so happy to see the return of HGTV Magazine. It’s such a cute and colorful issue filled with great tips and tricks. I’ve marked quite a few pages of their October/November issue, like the tour of Karen Bow’s home. She’s got a thing for hot pink and fearlessly took the plunge with her interiors. I love the details in her dining room (above), which has such a cheerful feel while still maintaining elegance and sophistication. If you’d like to see the rest of her home it’s here.

I can’t believe it’s already time for the October decor magazine round-up!

As you can imagine, most of the October issues are all about Fall with pumpkins being featured prominently in the vast majority of them. I love how artfully Country Living has transformed their pumpkins (above). It’s amazing to find out that they’re such quick and easy DIY projects.

Here’s the lowdown on the DIY: With a foam brush, give each pumpkin two coats of acrylic paint, waiting 30 minutes between coats. Then apply weather-resistant vinyl decals of your choice. Easy peasy and so impressive.

House Beautiful

It seems I have quite a collection of decor magazines on my coffee table this month so I thought I’d select a few and let you in on their highlights.

House Beautiful’s issue is all about “color, color, COLOR!” It’s interesting to read the results of their survey about the color preferences of Americans from coast to coast. It seems the majority love BLUE overall but, interestingly, top paint color picks are quite different from region to region and room to room.

In this issue I am in love with the living room (shown above) designed by Kay Douglass – fabulous pops of orange!

You also have to take a look at the dining area below by Benjamin Dhong, it is amazing.

Yonge & Eglinton

I decided to visit the Yonge and Eglinton area in mid-town Toronto today. I wouldn’t exactly call it a “Design District”, like the King East area I wrote about here, but it is definitely filled with furniture and home accessory stores as well as a multitude of restaurants and just about any other type of store or office you can imagine. Most of shops are one-of-a-kind, however some of the big chains have definitely made their mark.
