Have you ever heard of fairy gardens? They’re miniature gardens, indoors or out, which appear to have very small inhabitants, like fairies. You can usually find them at the foot of a shady tree, in a secluded corner of the garden or in a container. The thought is that creating an inviting little spot with pretty flowers, small decorations and a resting place will attract magical fairies to visit.

So it’s official, with a dip in the mercury and sunsets beginning earlier and earlier, Autumn has truly arrived around here. It’s time to start thinking about bundling up and hunkering down, planning and preparing for the dark, cold months ahead. It’s time to nest.
Interestingly, I just found this empty birds’ nest in the backyard, its former inhabitants long departed for trees in warmer, sunnier locales. Isn’t it funny that just as the birds are done with their nests, it’s time for us to curl up inside and feather our own?
As we get busy making our interiors more cosy, our exterior surroundings are preparing to undergo some dramatic changes.

My garden is a little piece of purple heaven right now. Thanks to the warm winter and the early spring, our plants have grown lush and lovely in no time at all. Right now the Clematis vines are giving us an unbelievable cascade of rich purple blooms.

I’m very fortunate to have visited the island of Bermuda a few times over the past few years. As small as it is, it’s filled with so many interesting people, customs and sights which have no doubt been influenced by its long history of being invaded by or trading with countries around the world.
While touring Bermuda you can’t help but notice that scattered all over the island are semi-circular structures called moon gates. They seem to be in random locations such as bus shelters, at the entrances of homes, beside harbors and in the middle of parks and gardens. On my visits, each sighting of a moon gate didn’t reveal any rhyme or reason for them other than simply “decoration”. Finally, on my most recent trip, I came across one with an explanatory sign.

It’s finally May, my favorite month and the start of the sweetest stretch of the year for me. At this point in the year, I am captivated by both the freshness of Spring and the promise of beautiful Summer days to come.
These are the days when I can seriously begin to think about lounging outside, however, this amazing piece of outdoor furniture (designed by Youssef Hasbani of L’Atelier) has been on my mind ever since I laid eyes on it, way back in January at the Interior Design Show. From that day on, whenever I have pictured my dream garden there has definitely been one of these included…

For the past couple of days the weather has been overcast and on the chilly side. Today, even though we’re in the last week of April, the clouds are threatening to sprinkle some snow! Nevertheless, around our neighborhood the Spring flowers, like these pansies in such beautiful shades of violet, are putting on their best show.

Although I’m not much of a gardener, as the temperatures have been warming up and the “April showers” have started, I’ve been thinking about the beautiful flowers that will be blooming in May. Right now there are some little buds popping out and the grass is a bit greener, but for the most part my backyard looks brown and dead.
