I’m very fortunate to have visited the island of Bermuda a few times over the past few years. As small as it is, it’s filled with so many interesting people, customs and sights which have no doubt been influenced by its long history of being invaded by or trading with countries around the world.
While touring Bermuda you can’t help but notice that scattered all over the island are semi-circular structures called moon gates. They seem to be in random locations such as bus shelters, at the entrancesĀ of homes, beside harbors and in the middle of parks and gardens. On my visits, each sighting of a moon gate didn’t reveal any rhyme or reason for them other than simply “decoration”. Finally, on my most recent trip, I came across one with an explanatory sign.
